Top Tokyo Christmas Markets for All the Holiday Feels

After a hiatus of a few years, Tokyo’s winter markets are back for 2022! Well, most of them. If you want to kick off the holiday season with a bit of European flair, find that special handmade ornament, or just drink some steaming hot wine, read on for a round-up of some of the best Tokyo Christmas markets.

Note: Some Christmas markets are held as part of longer winter illuminations that run from mid- or late November through the New Year. The markets are typically held over a few weeks/weekends in December.

Tokyo Christmas Market

With a name like that, you’d expect it to be the Christmas market to beat all others — and it pretty much is, seeing as it has the backing of the German Tourism Association and the German Embassy. Held in Hibiya Park, it is a market for European food and drink (think German-style sausage, stew, hot wine, cider, cocoa, and beer). There are also a few booths selling decor, gifts, and winter gear. Once you’ve wandered through the stalls, grab a warming drink and watch the live music to round out those Christmas feels.

Note that admission isn’t free. As a way to limit numbers at the venue, they’re selling tickets for ¥1,000 for weekdays and ¥1,500 for weekends. We’re not sure exactly how many tickets they have, but there’s a good chance they will sell out.

This is a traditional Christmas market based on ones you’d find in the German city of Stuttgart, so expect handmade trinkets, advent calendars, and a whole lot of sausages. Don’t forget to check out the illuminations nearby; the market is only one part of Roppongi Hills’ festive celebrations. The other highlight is the illuminations along Keyakizaka (the lovely tree-lined street nearby).

This may not be in Tokyo, but Yokohama is only a 1-hour train journey away. Plus, this is one of the most picturesque Christmas markets in Japan. Held at Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse — a pair of handsome brick buildings next to the bay — this festive bonanza has wooden stalls, a Christmas tree with classic lights and decorations, cake, more hot wine and stollen, premium beer, and again, plenty of sausages. While not part of the Christmas Market, there’s also an ice rink in the same complex!

For the first time since the pandemic, the Tokyo Skytree Town’s Christmas market is back. Part of the longer Tokyo Skytree Dream Christmas event, the market will be held from November 18 till Christmas Day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. You’ll get all the typical yuletide treats, live music performances, as well as some of the best illuminations in Tokyo.

This market will put a modern spin on the typical German Christmas market by replacing stalls with food trucks and covering the fourth floor of Miyashita Park with purple lights. There will also be photo booths and lots of Instagrammable spots. The market will be held from December 10 to 25. See the Miyashita Illumination event listing below for more details.

Along with their illuminations and other Christmas festivities, Tokyo Dome City will hold a Christmas market on the weekends of Dec. 17 to 18 and Dec. 24 to 25. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., you’ll find stalls filled with wreaths, cakes, coffee, and candles. There will also be a library for festive reading, live music on the LaQua Garden Stage, a telescope to spot stars on a clear night, and opportunities to meet Santa. Yoyogi Park World Christmas Festival

Over a weekend in December every year — Dec. 17 to 18 for 2022 — Yoyogi Park Events Square collects Christmas lovers from all over the world for a party. This isn’t your typical market but there will be performances, international food, and maybe even some samba.
